local food editorial
Hey all: This is an interesting editorial, published in the NY Times today, about the challenges small farmers face when trying to grow non-commodity crops (commodity crops being wheat, corn, soybeans, rice, etc) to keep up with the growing demand for locally-grown food. From this editorialist's perspective (he's a farmer from Minnesota), U.S. government policies and subsidies make it next to impossible for small, regional markets to develop, in favor of the near-monopoly fruit & veggie growers in Florida and California have over national markets.
