Meat-Guzzling

"...if Americans were to reduce meat consumption by just 20 percent it would be as if we all switched from a standard sedan — a Camry, say — to the ultra-efficient Prius [in terms of energy consumption]."

A friend of mine sent me a link to a NY Times article today, entitled "Rethinking the Meat-Guzzler". It is along the same lines as many of the articles I've been posting lately, addressing the high cost and energy required for the amount of food we eat. It even mentions agricultural subsidies and how getting rid of them could help cut back on our consumption - less supply equals higher demand initially but overall less consumption. It also mentions grass-fed beef and how they're better for the environment but more difficult to produce in mass quantities.

Long story short? Our rate of consumption is too high and we don't need nearly as much meat (or food perhaps?) as we're eating. But maybe that's being overly simplistic...

I read that too! I think Shannon posted it on Facebook. It really made me think about how much meat I eat every day... and how much antibiotics and hormones I'm ingesting along with it. Maybe going vegetarian isn't a crazy idea... but I love meat too much to completely give it up. :)

Yeah, I don't think going completely vegetarian is the solution, but that's why I like the line about cutting meat consumption by 20% and how much of an impact that can have. That and buying grass-fed beef from local farms...
